The Parasol Protectorate II - Changeless

jueves, 7 de junio de 2012

Today we will continue with the second part of The Parasol Protectorate series: Changeless, Gail Carriger's work that follows with the adventures of Alexia Tarabotti that began in Soulless.

This time we won't talk about Gail Carriger, because we introduced her in the last post, so we will start directly with the book. Changeless takes over Soulles without leaving the victorian aesthetic that moods the stories of Alexia, returning to the ideas of this alternative world where Gail Carriger's characters live, from werewolves to vampires , from preternaturals to humans, all of the living in "harmony".  But this time things go wrong since Lord Maccon's werewolves pack camps in the garden of Woolsey Castle when they return from Egypt, because, for unknown reasons, all of them are being affected by a preternatural effect on a large scale: Now all of them are mortals. This will take Lord Maccon to travel to his homeland in Scotland to solve some matters from the past, while Alexia suffers the indecision of the innocent Ivy and her annoying family. A really long travel that will make us realiza that Alexia isn't free from being pursued yet. Somebody's trying to kill her at any price.

This time, thiw novel doesn't begin in a so shocking way as Soulles did, but, of course, at this point we all know that Alexia is a preternatural girl and that vampires and werewolves do exist. However, the action is much more continuous, adding new characters such as Madame Lefoux, a nice French woman that belongs to the Order of the Brass Octopus (yes, at last it has a name and not, they're not as evil as they seemed, but they've got more story behing them). Furthermore, we will be present in the daily life between three characters that are radically opposed: Alexia Tarabotti (our main character), Ivy Hisselpenny (her lovely and innocent friend) and Evylin Loontwill (her annoying half-sister. A whole comedy. Or a drama, it depends on how you look at ti. In the other hand, the plot continues being as good, or even better, than in Soulless, because we assist to the begining of the series itsself, with a storyline that continues through the rest of the books, letting us to know more thing about Alexia's father and about their preternatural being. And, although I don't want to spoiler anybody, the late surprises are incredibly amazing and will let nobory careless, of that I'm sure. The style of Gail Carriger carries on, becoming, in my opinion, the Jules Verne of this alternative story that leads us to the world of Steampunk.

In short, if you read Soulles and you liked it, Changeless will leave you wanting more Alexia Tarabotti, but don't worry, we have series for a while. See you soon ^^

Alguien intenta matarla a toda costa.
