Today we introduce an essential reading for all those
interested both in fiction literature and Steampunk world. We're going to be immersed in the XIXth Century
London from the hand of Gail Carriger.
Gail Carriger is a writer from Bolinas (California), who was
graduated in archeology, and who digs up manners and bustles that flow on past
times to bring them to us.
She's the undisputed creator of the lovely, in her own way,
Alexia Tarabotti, her stunning family and the brillian Lord Maccon; characters
that belong to The Parasol Protectorate series, that, as we said in other
posts, leads us to a victorian London plagued by vampires, ghosts and
werewolves; an atmosphere where mrs. Tarabotti will be involved in more than a
thousan adventures.
In this case, I'm going to comment the first part of this
series: Soulless, a book that introduces everyone in the universe created by
Carriger and to the first of the single lady Alexia Tarabotti.
Maybe reading my short introduction it can look like one of
those thousands of love novels full of doubtful teenagers, stunning men and
love triangles, but not at all.
We start from a victorian setting, both the universe where
this adventure is located and her writting style, which is quick and ironic
sometimes. Easy to read and
alarmingly addictive, the words of Carriger are in a quick succession in a
display of manners. Her writting style attracted my atention from the
beginning, that's why I hadn't seen nothing else like that before, as I thought
when I finished the first book: If Steampunk had its own canon when talking,
this woman would be a model to follow.
Concerning the plot, nothing to see with what usually we are
offered: A story with intrigues and adventures, with romantic touches and a
pinche of pepper. Supernatural plays a really important role, as the opened
branch of the preternatural that is defined in this novel. Concerning to the action: Disappearances,
creations of horribly dressed vampires and a murderer where mrs. Tarabotti is
fully involved because of her parasol. A shocking beginning that invites to us
to continue reading. In
general, this plot is quite amusing and easy to follow, without an excess of
characters, and with some racy scenes that Carriger process in a brilliant way.
I really recoment that book to everyone,
it's out of what we see actually on the
market and it's able to entertain the less assiduous reader. I strongly
recomend this book.

Para hoy, presentamos una lectura indispensable para todos
aquellos interesados, tanto en la literatura de ficción como en el mundo del
steampunk. Vamos a sumergirnos en el Londres del siglo XIX de la mano de Gail
Carriger.
Gail Carriger es una escritora procedente de Bolinas
(California) y graduada en arqueología, que desentierra modales y polisones del
fluir de los tiempos para traerlos hasta nosotros.
Creadora indiscutible de la adorable, a su manera, Alexia
Tarabotti, su despampanante familia y el flamante Lord Maccon; personajes
pertenecientes a la saga El Protectorado de la Sombrilla, que como ya he
mencionado, nos transporta a un Londres victoriano plagado de vampiros,
fantasmas y hombres lobo; ambiente en el que la señorita Tarabotti se va a ver
envuelta en mil y una aventuras.
En este caso, me dispongo a comentar la primera parte de la
susodicha saga: Sin Alma, libro que nos introduce al universo de Carriger y a
la primera de las aventuras de la solterona Alexia Tarabotti.
Quizás al leer mi breve introducción, esta puede parecer
otra de tantas novelas amorosas y adolescentes de dudas, hombretones
despampanantes y triángulos amorosos, nada que ver.
Partimos de una ambientación victoriana, tanto en el
universo en el que se fundamente la lectura, como en la propia forma de
escribir, a la par que rápida e irónica en ocasiones. Fácil de leer y
alarmantemente adictiva, las palabras de Carriger se suceden rápidamente en un
alarde de modales. Tal forma de escribir llamó mi atención desde el primer
momento, ya que hasta ahora nunca había visto algo por el estilo, como concluí
al terminar la primera novela: Si el steampunk tuviera su propio canon a la
hora de hablar, esta mujer sería el modelo a seguir.
En cuanto al argumento, nada que ver con lo que normalmente
nos ofrecen: Una historia tanto de intrigas y aventuras, con aires románticos y
un toque de pimienta. Lo sobrenatural juega un papel importante, al igual que
la inaugurada rama de lo preternatural que se define en la novela, en lo que se
refiere a la acción: Desapariciones, creaciones de vampiros horriblemente
vestidos y un asesinato en el que la señorita Tarabotti se ve inmiscuida a
causa de su sombrilla. Un principio chocante, que nos invita a seguir leyendo.
En general, la trama resulta bastante entretenida y fácil de seguir, sin un
exceso de personajes, y con alguna escena subida de tono que Carriger trata de
forma brillante.
Realmente un libro recomendable para todos los públicos, que se sale de
lo que vemos actualmente en el mercado y que es capaz de entretener al lector
menos asiduo. Lo recomiendo encarecidamente.
