Everyday Fashion II - Sanrio

domingo, 29 de abril de 2012

We continue with the T-shirts with a print inspired by the steampunk culture. I have found another starring, this time, by characters that belongs to the japanese company Sanrio.
As I suppose you know, Sanrio has created icons so famous like Hello Kitty, My Melody, Cinnamoroll... and other less known.
This time, I'm going to talk about the first two:

Hello Kitty is a little white kitty with a red ribbon (Althoug the color can change) that this time tries a top hat and a monocle. We can find a lot of different products inspired by her. Hello Kitty was designed by Yuko Shimizu in 1974 but today the position is held by Yuko Yamaguchi. Nowadays, Hello Kitty generates about 250 millions just selling licenses, a big deal I think.
Again, this T-shirt belongs to the shop Hottopic, in my oppinion this is one of the best prints that I have found on the internet.

On the other hand, he have the print inspired by My Melody, a white rabbit that always wears a hood, maybe it's less known. Created in 1975, but it becomes popular after a year in 1976, although it doesn't have the same success and revenue that Hello Kitty. Nowadays, it's very popular, specially in Asia.
In this case we can see an addaptation maybe more exaggerated, with an aviator cap and goggles, in the background a balloon with the sheep Hitsuji, a My Melody's friend. I have found this t-shirt in Amazon.

In my oppinion, I think it is original to see this characters out of their "context". As long as they don't fell in banality (Gears and more gears everywhere) it's a good way to make know the steampunk.

                                                           * * * * *

23/04

lunes, 23 de abril de 2012

We have just a few minutes before the 23rd of April ends, the International Day of the Book, so, after buying some of them, we come to talk about a Top 5 of literary recommendations with Steampunk themes to take a look to them in the future. Let's go with them.

The one about the theme
The art of Steampunk (by Art Donovan) - This work seeks to celebrathe the Steampunk worl, a world full of innovations and beauty, where steam power and energy create unique and unusual machinery. Here you can find works of authors from all over the world, with only and captivating visions about all this genre.

The one that collects
Steampunk! An anthology of fantastically rich and strange stories (by Kelly Link) - It is, possibly, the biggest Steampunk anthology written until this moment, with fourteen authors with their own name, that impulse the genre through adventures, stories and science fiction. It also includes the work of two graphic artists that put science fiction in places such as the Ancient Rome, Australia from the future or an alternative California.

The one in the saga
The parasol protectorate (by Gail Carriger) - Alexia Tarabotti is single and orphan of father. In spite of that, she has been atacked in a bad way by a vampire with no respect for the social behaviors. That wouldn't be so much if, in spite of every these things, Alexia had soul, but she hasn't. Between vampires, werewolves and the Queen of England herself, Alexia Tarabotti becomes the main character of a series that mixes the sobriety of the Victorian Era with the flamboyance of supernatural facts

The one with the adaptation
The invention of Hugo Cabret (by Brian Selznick) - Hugo is an orphan boy, watchmaker and thief, who lives in a Parisian railway station where he tries to hide his existence, until he is discovered by a strange girl and a bitter toymaker. With this work, the written mixes with the drawing, becoming a picture book that invite to us to not drop the book.

The one in the future
Acronos - This book is the first Steampunk anthology in Spanish, composed by and for the lovers of the genre, and all those who want to open their doors to this. It has walked some steps and now is in the half of the way, but we hope that everything goes right and it reaches the acknowledgement on its stage. You can follow the developement and other literary contests in the blog.

* * * * *

Abney Park

miércoles, 18 de abril de 2012

Abney Park now is a Steampunk band based in Seattle that mixes elements of world music, with industrial dance and lyrics influencied by the steampunk world. But at the firts, Abney Park was a goth industrial band.
Their name comes from Abney Park Cemetery in London (UK).

Now, they have recorded 12 albums, and they're preparing a new release for the 2nd June (2012) with the title "The Ancient World". I would like to highlight the album "Lost Horizonts", my fauvorite, where you can find maybe one of the best songs of this group: Airship Pirate.

This song has inspired the role playing game, Airship Pirate, wich was published in August.  It's set in the post-apocalyptic world after their album, "The End Of Days", a future world with a severely disrupted timeline. It places players in command of their own steam-powered airships ready for the pillages and battles, meanwhile the world below struggles squalor under an oppressive government.

In my opinion, it's one of the groups that are an icon in the steampunk world, with a sound that breaks the things that we are used to heard and lyrics that don't indifferent, opening a new world for us. Absolutely recomendable.

                                                        * * * * *

Absolutamente recomendables.

Discombobulate

lunes, 16 de abril de 2012

Oi. Here we are once again, but before starting, I leave you this musical accompaniment to read in a more friendly way this review. Hope you like it.

It's about three years ago that the film Sherlock Holmes, by Guy Ritchie, was launched and, for those who like it, and those who don't, it has become one of the biggest movie phenomenon, and a really strong reference for the Steampunk culture. But today I will just talk about the first part. The second one is another completely different subject of debate.

In this first part we're told about the begining of a global scale plan thought by Moriarty himself. Here we find that reality mixes with fiction, the scientific facts with superstition, the chemistry with religion... Holmes' deducting capabilities are tested to solve a case that goes beyond of that what he's used to. Dead people coming back to live, chemical weapons and ghosts from the past that appear in the same moment that Holmes needs something more than a simple distraction.

There are people that didn't like the first film, meanwhile I was enjoying it as little kid watching it, and I'm still doing it in spite of having seen it tens of times. Some of them say that it's shown a really different Sherlock Holmes from that one they're used to see, but the question is, what Sherlock Holmes is the real one? In novels and stories, not in a constant way, but time to time, it's mentioned that Sherlock Holmes drinks, that Sherlock Holmes boxes, that gets high, and that he's a sociopath (a high-functioning one), somebody that, from the first time we meet him, is shown jumping in happiness in a chemical lab but, at the same time, he has forgotten his ridding crop in the morgue. That's the true Sherlock, a man with the brain of an adult and the spirit of a child.

The victorian era has a great influence in some of the most famous films made in the last years, specially with this aesthetic movement, maybe that's because it combines the man's mind against the inevitable advance of the machines, and who's better to show us this than the greatest (and most fictional) mind ever created?

In summary, we find a mistery film with hard deductions (sometimes taken from the work of Conan Doyle, something that, at least to me, has quite charm), mixing it with the fair dose of action and humour. In my opinion, one of the best films I could see in the last years, and one of the best ones that I will ever see about Sherlock Holmes. What do you think about it?

Hola.

Everyday Fashion I - My Little Pony

jueves, 12 de abril de 2012

Today I would like to talk about the steampunk inside a more casual and weareable fashion. In summary, specially T-shirts and other clothes where we can find some references to that style, we don't have to give up what we like in the day to day.

I'm going to start with some products from Hottopic, a shop that offers us a lot of clothes with differents prints. In this case, My little pony, that leave butterflies and cakes to wear goggles.
Relatively recently, My little pony is a cartoon series with her own characters, some of these characters appears in this T-shirt: Rainbow Dash on the top with mechanical wings and an aeropropulsor, AppleJack on a rocket with a very "feel like a sir" style , Fluttershy with her wings and Twilight Sparkle with her hot air balloon.

In my opinion, it's a very original idea transforming these characters that belongs to the "pop culture", to adapt them to the steampunk aesthetic. In this case, I'm a person who have a nice time watching privately My little pony. I really like the adaptation and that these characters have been chosen (They are very known in the net). It's a pity the grey background, it doesn't fit, but it looks like comfortable (And original, of course).
It's in my infinite wishlist.

                                                               * * * * *

The Steampunk Bible

martes, 10 de abril de 2012

Today we've decided to make a little review about a big book: "The Steampunk Bible".

Everyone who has wanted to go on a trip to the Steampunk aesthetics should know, at least by hearing, about this book. The work of Jeff Vandermeer and S. J. Chambers is barely a year old and it has sounded all over the world because of the compilation of the loads of questions that all of us have: What Steampunk is? Where and why does it appear? What books and films has it gendered? Does the Steampunk music really exist? Some of them have no answer, and they give us some general shapes from which we have to judge ourselves, but in general it illustrates quite well, through images and descriptions, in what is every one of the sides of this victorian shapes world based on.

I must recognize that I specially love some short parts, as a little review to some of the most unknown genres as Boilerpunk or Gaslight Romance, or an annex that gives us some ideas to go, as writers, into the literature of this genre, or, my favourite, a manifesto about Steampunk movement. As I said before, I like also the selection of the images, because it's complicated to find so many of them in a so good quality to show some the places and characters that appear in the book. In general I think it's a good study work, as it's been studied the theme, as the origins in the victorian era haven been too. Mi greatest congratulations in this way to the writers. As a last thing to say in their favour, I will say that I love the reference to the cover of Jules Verne's work, a good choice to the subject they have chosen.

In the other hand (not everything can be good), I don't like too much the idea that they give about Steampunk music, although this is a completely personal assessment. Until recently, as the same that thought some friends of mine, I didn't think that music could be considered as Steampunk, although I started to believe in its existence when I knew some bands that, with classical instruments, as cello, violin or piano, make contemporary music. That's what I would call Steampunk music. In spite of everything, I must recognize that the musical groups that they have chosen to make notice this part are the most notable ones, specially because of their aesthetic in videoclips and on stage. In spite of everything, that's the only "bad" thing I can say about this book.

Summarizing, this is something basic for all the genre lover, to know what's boiling in the Steampunk world, to specify more about what ir, how is it lived, where does it merge... Ultimately, to go deeper and deeper in something that is much more than frock coats and gears.
* * * * *

Today I want to talk about "La Estrella", one of my recent readings and that it has lasted less than a week.

It's a young adult romance by Javier Araguz and Isabel Hierro. Both of them transport us to a post-apocalyptic world: The Earth, victim of our abuses, it's damaged in the future by the Wound, that looks like irreparable and causes that the Earth breaks into a lot of fragments and regroup with a different composition (These events are called Breaks in the Stillness).
In this situation, our hero, Lan, she looses in a Break in the Stillness and appears alone in a desert, although she's found by the Star Walkers (People that can't touch other people because of a curse, and that's why they travel around the Earth with news or products), but it's only the beginning, after that she must go away with her Kidnapper (It's a long story), but I don't want to forward events in spite it's very complex to summarize the story without driving mad those who read this.

In my opinion, it's an entertaining and funny story, because of the different worlds that it shows to us, although it's true that there's a big load of information that is shown in a hit from the beginning, but everything ends fitting, so there's nothing to worry. The characters are, each one in their way, a world to get inside, and the story ends making the reader loving them, of course, one more than others. Usually, when I read young novels, I end quite fed up of female main characters, but I must say that I love Lan and I'm tempted to draw her in a paper (As confirmed otaku that I am, I have uncontrollable desires of giving her a manga appearance). I must talk about the romantic part, although the ends leaves you with an incurable flood of tears, that fits in a perfect way with the adventures and the story. Absolutely advisable, and not just for the young audience.
Why do we talk about this book in our blog? It's enough to see the cover (Courtesy of Alassie) to realize about some features. In this case, I would like to typecast this universe into Biopunk: Desert and mountain landscapes, clans that coexist with nature, some inventions that are curious at least and, above everything, the great purpose of saving the planet.

                                                            * * * * *

Willkommen, bienvenue...
